Default Guestbook Postings for IBLs

I would have thought the Google algo would have been savvy enough to pickup "links for link sake" from search engine optimisers who get all of their IBLs from Guestbook postings - especially if the pages are entitled "Guestbook".

However, on doing some general analysis of a site that appears on Google SERPs page 1 (and has been there for many months) for a keyword that I am researching, all 200+ are from Guestbooks and maybe only a quarter of them look to be related to their core content.

Is this a short term strategy that will eventually be classified as spamming or is this a valid method for obtaining links?

Hi pitchblack.

I didn't particularly want to get into mud-slinging by naming sites. It was more of a general question gauged towards the use of Guestbooks for obtaining IBLs, rather than a crusade against a particular site who partake in potentially "grey area" SEO antics.

What are your thoughts? Do you use Guestbooks to boost IBL count?

Thx

MicroPersuasion recently had a post that said Google is going to allow people to use a "rel="nofollow" attribute tag" to help stop comment (and guestbook) spamming...

I've asked the same question recently:

And I see the same site holding the same serps. Out of 10,000,000 results. What is you niche market?

I wouldn't call this strategy. It is spam. Stay away from guestbooks! The links from guestbooks will go to the recicle bin, someday. And even if you don't get penalized for guestbooks spam, you'll waste a valuable time on the wrong track.
