Default How do you measure adword conversion if all go to same url

Say you've got 1 product page and 4 adwords each leading to this product.

How do you track which adword is converting best?
Google tells you to paste javascript into the
page, for example, where your brochure is ordered.

Let's call it the "thankyou" page but surely that just records the overall conversions and can't differentiate which adword was used?

Would your site stats not show the referral URL with the original search term?

chocolate4free,

Your site statistics, log files, should show what referrer your visitor came from, like astoller mentioned... You can use a program such as ClickTracks to track your visitors habits. The great thing about ClickTracks (even though it lacks A LOT of features that can be easily implemented) is that you could set up certain scenarios/paths that your visitor can take and then track just those visitors that, for example, ended up on the thank you page after searching for a specific term...

You should check it out...

Default Google is sophisticated

Actually, their conversion tracker not only goes down to which ad group gave you the conversion, but which keyword did it. If you paste the JavaScript, they do a pretty good job of telling you as much as they can about the conversions. This just makes you buy more ads because you see what's working and want more of it. That's why we're up to 50,000 key phrases that we purchase.

There are indeed some even better tools on the market, but their free one works pretty well.

If you are using unique keywords for each ad then you will be able to tell. If you are using the same keywords for all for ads, and all ads are in the same group, no way of knowing. If you are using the same keywords and simply different text, place each ad in its own group. Your conversion should show which particular ad clicked that way.

So if I paste the javascript in my thank you page, will that pick up which keyword was used i.e. it can differentiate between between keywords?
I've pasted javascript in the past and I dont get a result.

Default That's how it works

That's the way it works. Paste in their code and they tell you the keyword used for the conversion. There are some other tools you can use, some are like $20/month for some basic services, but you'll get a decent overall picture using their tracking tool.

You can use your own tracking parameters in target url.

http://www.mysite.com/myproducts.asp...key=my+keyword

Just run a script to read URL on first Session_Start and parse Querystring, set tracking cookie, etc

In a nutshell this is Performace Marketing Console works and most other tracking software like WebTrends etc
