Google daily repositions some sites
Some sites are re-positioned on a daily basis (the date appears at the end of its listing) and are moved around constantly whereas other sites remain static, day after day, month after month. (nothing to do with PageRank)

For the few search terms I follow, results page 1 remains fairly consistent with almost no variation day-to-day. Page 2 has some volatility, page 3 has more, and pages 4 and higher are very volatile.
Do others find this to be true?

It is a good sign really. It means that it actually makes a difference when you make changes to your site. Where are you now?
Welcome to the forums!

Still I do not understand...then how do you explain the one that are not affected by competition (they remain static as soon as they do not have a date at the end of their listing), which means that google is not visiting them daily. As far as the site in question, it was 4th on 1st page, then the next day
10th, then 12th, then again 4th then now it is 12th without any date mentioned...maybe meaning that Google decided for another unkown reason to leave it there... so I do not think that competition is the main factor.
Thanks.

I find that when Google has a major update of either PR or IBLs, positioning moves around for a few days. You may find that you now settle around the 12th mark as you mentioned. Don't forget, it's not just about your site moving up but just as much about other moving down. If Google is updating and you haven't changed your pages it's likely to be the latter.

The opposite might be true as far as updating my site, (maybe too much???) I still don't get why some irrelevant sites get placed before 12 (some have even double listings -the second indented- Google will never fail to amaze me.
PS. I just moved down my "marquee" (sliding text) may be it did interfer with the smooth reading of Google's bot. By the way the site in question is 1 in MNS and Yahoo..

You can't get lazy.
I have one site that had been #1 for its phrase for at least a month. It has been page 1 for months. I got lazy, and didn't update it for a few weeks.
I checked the other day, and it was #2!
So I quickly made a token update, to keep it fresh, and voila, the next day it was back at #1.
Google loves fresh meat.

Thanks for reminding to get some changes made tomorrow. I haven't done anything for a few days. I got occupied starting a blog for a change and trying to promote it a bit.
