Default Blogging no no with google?

I am new to this whole SEO concept. I started a blog that is hosted on blogspot last year. I woefully neglected it for many months but recently started posting to it once again.

I have a website that is directly related to the subject of the blog. I decided to publish the blog twice. Once on blogspot, and also on my site via FTP. I figured that would add more content to my site for google to crawl and index, and the content is related to the rest of my site.

Was this a bad idea. I just checked google and my most recent posts seem to have been indexed in google via the blogspot blog, but the pages on my actual site are not indexed. Am I being penalized for duplicate content?

Should I just kill the blogspot version of the blog or is it "too late" already?

There is no duplicate content "penalty" per se -- it's just that you won't get both copies of a page indexed.

You can kill the blogspot version and wait for the other one to be indexed, or since the blogspot version is already indexed you could kill the other copies. But you're not going to get both of them indexed, as you've discovered.

Thanks for the reply! I guess I will kill the blogspot blog or at least those pages that I prefer get indexed on my main site.

I just wanted to say thanks once again. I killed the pages on blogspot, and a few days later that content is indexed in google from my main site. I much prefer that.

I guess now it would be safe to re add those pages back to blogspot and any future posts, I can do first to my site, then a few days later, after they have been added to google, add them to blogspot.

Wanting the blog as part of your own site I understand.

What I don't get is why you want to duplicate the posts at blogspot -- makes no sense to me at all.

That is cool. . .makes almost no sense to me either. . . . .LOL. Back when I started that blog, I got some sites to link to it. Nothing major, but I would never be able to remember exactly who and how.

I guess I can just try and pay attention to where the visitors come from and try and get the links changed etc. Some of the directories that linked to the blog, may not link to the site as they may think it is commercial where the blog is not.

Then again, I'm lazy and the blogspot version will probably just die a slow painful death. . . . .

Default I also do this

I also do regular updates to my website selling things from Japan (http://www.jlist.com) and repost my comments on my blog (http://peteratjlist.blogspot.com). Because I add so much extra text, e.g. other links, additional text, I hope that it won't be considered duplicate content. The reason I do it is so that people who don't ever leave blogspot can see my site, while others who access my site directly can see it that way. Content is king, so being able to use my views on living in Japan in two venues is good. Does this seem reasonable?
