Default Google cache

I have been checking my cache in google a lot lately trying to see when changes to my website are noticed. My index page was cached on 11-26, I made some changes and waited for the next cache. I got one on 11-30 and a jump in my ranking corresponded. Today when I checked, the cached version of my index page and the date of the cache was back at 11-26 again and I lost all the ground that I had gained. Can anyone explain this? Thanks.

Welcome to WPW

Google has lots of different data centers. When updates occur, it takes time to propagate it to all data centers. Sometimes data centers revert to older versions (?tech probs) - you are just getting results from different data centers.

So is this just a bad time for me to try and fine tune my site with an update in progress. Or are you talking about the constant updating that is done?

Updates are constant. There will always be some slight variation between data centers on a regular basis.
