Checking Rank

I have heard Google doesn't like rank checking?
Does this fall into a site they wouldn't like?

Truthfully I don't think I understand exactly what they don't like when it comes to rank checking.
Could someone explain?

Hi Lynn. Yes, that site falls under the umbrella of automated rank checking that Google frowns upon.

The reason they don't want people doing it is because it sucks up a lot of bandwidth. Just a handful of webmasters checking their rankings every now and then wouldn't cause a problem, but if several thousand did it at once (like on a day like today when the index is settling) it would bring their servers to their knees.
