What causes Google Rank fluctuation?

I have a site that keeps bouncing back and forth on ranks. Started with a ranking of 454 and boosted to 236. About 2 weeks later the rank went to 149 and hung around there for about 3 weeks. Then the ranking went up to 107 and stayed for a couple weeks..

About 3 weeks ago the site went from 107 to 95 overnight. Stayed there for 24 hours and went to 93. After about another 24 hours we were back at 107.

Then the fluctuation started. Seems like Mon-Thurs the rank stays between 101 and 107 bouncing all around in between. Then Friday evening the rank will pop up in the mid to upper 90's and stay until late Monday afternoon.

This is on one keyword. I have 2 other keywords the site ranks on hit #1 and never moved but for this particular keyword that is not the case.

Yes, it's most likely because Google is constantly changing and "tweaking" their algorithm. And as they find more backlinks for sites, more people add and change their web pages, the search results will constantly change.

Google constantly tweaks the ranking criteria--sometimes they may put more emphasis on link text, sometimes more on keyword density, more on title tags, etc. etc. I call this "turning the knob" back and forth to get better, more relevant search results.

Well I was wondering why the up and down..

Yesterday I hit 90 all day long and had been there all weekend since Friday.. Today I am at 103.. Be glad when it bounces on up there and fluctuates on the 1-10 page. Then I will be just fine with the bouncing :)
