what is the best way to redirect one domain to another

Can anyone suggest me the best way to redirect different domain to one main domain.

My understanding is that a 301 redirect is the most compliant for Google.

Apparently some say Yahoo has a tough time with 301's, but there really aren't any better alternatives that I've heard of.
