Google drop

I'm a relative beginner at SEO, web work etc., so imagine my surprise and satisfaction when I saw a site I've been working on for a while listed as the last entry, page 1 of Google for a particular search term. Felt nice to finally see some pay off, ya know; even thought 'Hey! May be I will be able to get it up to number 1!'

Went to look today, and the site doesn't even appear in the first 1000+ results. How can this happen in, literally, 2 days?!? Talk about ego deflating!!

What's worse is a lot of the JUNK I see listed for the same term- some of it relevant to the term, some not.

How does this occur and how can I get the page back up there?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
