Default Redirects or building site and having links

I own a few sites about 30 but I only have maybe 5 websites. The thing is I have all the other ones redirected to one that is my main site. Which is http://Statenisland.com then I have like Statenislandnews.com and Statenislandlinks.com and a few more that are similar. Now I hear about redirects being no good and you can get banned from Google. I think am as I dont see me coming up when Staten Island is searched. Would it be better recomended that I build these sites and then have a link to Statenisland.com I do alright in Yahoo but would like to do even better.
Anyone know what should I do so I can get on Googles search can stop being banned if I am already. If its just that I have no backlinks or links can I do it from making the sites and making links?
Thank You
Kevin

Redirects will not get you banned, if done right. Google recommends that they be 301's in the guidelines.

Do a site search here - also read the thread on buisness.com being banned.

All you ned is a basic 301 redirect. here is some information.

----------------------
INSTRUCTION ON UPLOADING A 301 REDIRECT

First of all, you'll need to download the .htaccess file in the root directory of where all your web pages are stored. If there is no .htaccess file there, you can create one with Notepad or a similar application. Make sure when you name the file that you remember to put the "." at the beginning of the file name. This file has no tail extension.

If there is a .htaccess file already in existence with lines of code present, be very careful not to change any existing line unless you are familiar with the functions of the file.

Scroll down past all the existing code, leave a line space, then copy and paste the line below as is:

redirect 301 / http://www.yourtargetdomain.com

It's as easy as that. Save the file, upload it back into your web and test it out by typing in the old address to the page you've changed. You should be instantly and seamlessly transported to the new location.

HTH

Default 302=bad

No, 302 redirects are the "bad" kind. Those are temporary redirects. If memory serves me, that is the kind of redirect Business.com was using when they got banned in the thread cbp mentioned.
