Default Google vs Yahoo

I have found a considerable difference between Google and Yahoo in detecting and displaying the number of links pointing to our web site. Yahoo shows 38 links while Google shows 7. Can anyone shed light on how this can happen? All 38 links are valid and functioning.
It looks like google is presently having some glitches in their indexing. Our web site was showing a page rank of 5 until last week and for the past 5 days our home page has ranked 0. We have not made any changes to our site at all.
I also noticed that many technical web sites are ranked 5 or less. Ours happens to be a technical site and it seems that we would rank a lot higher if we were selling watches.

Basically as google and yahoo crawl the web they find links to and from pages. They record these links and display them when you do a link search. These link results are only updated every 4 - 6 weeks on google, and yahoo updates them much less often.

Google often has datacenter glitches and will show inaccurate PageRank. The tool bar is fed from a certain google datacenter, so if the datacenter is doing anything abnormal you will see inconsistencies.

PageRank is based on incoming links, the topic of the site has nothing to do with the PageRank.

Thanks for the explanation. It is interesting that the 38 incoming links have been there for several months (almost one year)and they only show up on Yahoo.

With respect to the PageRank, our site has been 0 for the past 7 days. Could this be that we were banned for some reason? and if so, is there something we can do about it?

Appreciate your comments!

Its strange, Im not sure what is going on with your site. All of your other pages have PR except the home page. You're definately not banned. You have over 200 pages indexed which is good.

Did you recently change any of the site navigation?

The navigation structure has been the same for at least the last 6 months. The PR of the main page used to be 5 and changed to 0 about 10 days ago. Is there a way to contact Google about this?

Thx.

http://www.google.com/contact/search.html

Here is their contacts page. I have always gotten a reply within a few days of asking a question.

I would just be very polite and make sure you aren't doing anything that they may find unethical because they are going to look at your site if you ask them to.

Thanks for the contact info. I already submitted my questions on the PR and the number of incoming links. Hope we get a solution. We will let you know the results.

Thx.

Quick question, how does one find your backlinks with Google and Yahoo again?

One way I know to check for links is to type the following into the search box on Google or Yahoo
link:http://www.yoursite.com and type this to find other web sites with related subjects
related:http://www.yoursite.com Of course, "yoursite.com" would be replaced with with the name of your own web site.
Hope this helps.

Another way is to download the google toolbar and you can see the backlinks and the page rank on the menu
