Understanding Page Rank

Can someone please help me understand what page rank really means.

My site has gone from a page rank of 6 to a page rank of 0 back to a page rank of 6.

However, I have not seen any difference in the amount of traffic that I get.

In addition, for the keyword phrases that I use to search for my site I always come up on page 1 in Google.

So my question is why should I be concerned with what my page rank is as long as I am getting good amounts of traffic and I am highly ranked for the search terms I want to be found under?

PageRank is only a measure of the amount of inbound links coming into a site. Nothing more, nothing less. It has no affiliation with the amount of traffic and very little to do with your actual positioning in the SERPS. It just measures the amount of inbound links and through a complex algorithm it creates a number based on the links and the pagerank and other link related factors of the page linking to you.

So again I ask why is so much emphasis placed on a sites page rank?

My site's page rank can fluctuate quite a bit but it does not seem to effect the traffic results. So why does everyone talk about it so much?

I didn't know there was. Its just one factor and not the most important factor in ranking.

Thanks for the thread. That helps alot.

Since some of the auction site that I have been to that sell advertising, all sell based on their PR. Also, if you go to the exchange links section of this site there are many posts that indicate page rank. I felt that I needed a better understanding of what PR means.
