Portal site or Forum-------link farm,got punishment?

How can portal site or forum prevented itself from being considered as link farm and getting punishment from google? Since lots of links of different keywords in both portal site and forum's

I have a couple portals with thousands links back and forth.... and never has been considered as link farm. On the contrary, google values them really.
How can a single site, or even a couple sites (forum +portal) be considered a farm.
It does not look to me like you have to worry about something like that.

Normally a link farm has an agenda to get as many link to them as possible and require a link back. These links will often have nothing to do with the theme of the site, which is not a just a directory or portal.

In other words, the sole purpose of the links it to get customers to their other pages.
