deleting pages

I am in the process of updating my website and I am removing about 10 pages from the site which is currently online.

My question is if I remove the pages and google has listed them will it affect my rankings on google with other pages and will google drop my site if somepages which have been deleted are not available?

I regularly make & delete pages from my site.

I have a custom 404 error page that has a link to my home & site map pages upon it. Thus a visitor or bot does not get "lost".

I have seen no ill effect on my PR using this approach.
