Default Backlinks research

Can somebody help please?. I am new to SEO and want to start doing research about backlinks. Are there any good sources where I can start with the basics?

You are going to have to be more explicit about what you are asking. What do you mean by backlinks research?

Default Backlinks research

Ok, I mentioned I am new to this. Maybe I must ask the question " Is a backlink simply a link say for instance "from my site to another site that has relevance to the content and then a link back to my site". Is that all there is to it?

A backlink, the way Google uses the term, is any inbound link to a page from another site. You don't necessarily have to be linking both ways.

or, if you prefer,
backlink == inbound link

i agree with "hard coded" below is an example- when u read this post you will see 3 links with my signature- those are back links to my sites. similarly you need a lot of those from higher page ranked pages. i hope this clears your doubts.

You just add more and more links to your site only!

You'll want to find sites which do reciprocal linking and email the webmaster a reciprocal link request. Be sure to individualize your requests and research the site that you make the request with. It is important to try to keep your reciprocal links within your genre or something close. But the most important thing is make your link request personal. I can't tell you how irritating it is to get a "canned" request obviously done either automated or scripted which I've seen a thousand times.

Forget reciprocal linking for the most part! Does that confuse everyone?

Link on high PR Directories and Indices that will drive home targeted traffic!

THAT IS ALL!

For Ken: Are you saying don't look for reciprocal links at all? Because to find sites that are prepared to link to you without a backlink is not so easy.

I agree with getting listed in directories, but surely a link from a site that is relevant to my site and has a decent PR will be of benefit to me?

No, I am thinking that reciprocal doesn't count as well as a high PR incoming that is not reciprocal, though!
