I have been involved in Web Design since 2003 and had some coursework dealing with SEO. I have never really recommended Google AdWords to my clients, just because paying for online ads just was not something we were taught, it was about working the natural search results.
What I am trying to see is, how well does Google AdWords work for you or your clients? Is it successful enough to pitch the idea to them? Of course there are all kinds of things to consider like the client budget, the market they want to tap, keywords etc. I really am curious to hear any stories you may have about your local, regional, national or global successes or failings using this method of advertising. In advance, thank you for your responses!!

Hi there,
We do Adwords management for some clients and they've been very pleased with the results. It's particularly useful if a client is looking for immediate results that simply couldn't be achieved with SEO. Also, we've found that some clients haven't really spent any money on SEO. As a result, they may have low visibility within their industry sector. Again, Adwords can be a quick fix. Some people seem to think that SEO is a "cheaper" way of getting traffic, but that's probably because they've never got to grips with Adwords!

I used a free voucher for Google AdWords to promote an e-commerce site. I did some research sorted some optimised AdWords that would show on first page but not cost the Earth. Burned through £75 with but not much to see in terms of sales. I was not too worried because I did not pay for the cost and had to use up the voucher.
My advice is that if you are going to commit serious cash to AdWords - get some help from the professionals as otherwise you may well attract (i.e. pay for) customers who are merely window shopping on a wet Sunday afternoon. |

Yes, Google adwords is very effective but you have to know exactly what you're doing and what you're trying to achieve. If it didn't work, Google wouldn't be the monster that it is today. You have to do some research, decide what you're trying to achieve, do a lot of keyword research and the metrics that surround them and most importantly, you need to track each keyword so you know exactly which keyword converted to a sale. If you don't then you are throwing money down the drain. I can start off some campaigns with up to 2000 keywords, so some method of tracking has to be in place. There are free programmes about that will allow you to do that. One way you could start off is to throw a a large number of keywords into tightly grouped themes as separate ad groups, bid reasonably low, maybe he 11 or $.12 and leave it to on for a few days and then go and select all of keywords that have the highest impressions and or anything with a CTR of over 5% and then take those keywords and try launching a campaign. Basically if you don't a high CTR rate and can get your ad into the top one to four positions then you're going to struggle.
Good luck stu |

Google Adwords is highly effective. And we know it actually works well with organic results.
I read just in the last few days (and I'm sorry, I can't recall where) that searchers are more likely to click on an ad if the advertiser's website appears in the organic results ... maybe someone else can recall this study and give us a link. In any case, you can find lots of evidence (both anecdotal and scientific) that having both is a very useful. We know that repetition works, and I believe that an ad alongside an organic result gives the impression of a successful business. Of course, it goes without saying that there is a clear advantage to being able to control the description of your product or service. I have a favorite anecdote. A Key West fishing captain who is a client of mine was running a modest Adwords and Yahoo ad campaign along top 5 search results when his boat burned. We pulled the paid ads while he searched for a new yacht. Traffic fell by 40% but more significantly, inquiries fell by about 65%! FWIW, MJ

google adwords has been very effective for us. it always takes a while to optimize campaigns so that you are not wasting your money, but it's great because you can measure your return/conversions if you are an e-commerce site.
