I hope this is not too much of a beginner's question: What is the difference between the "Sponsored Links" that appear on the left side of a Google page above the organic listings and those that appear as Adwords on the right side of the page?
If I wanted to buy my client's way to the top of the left side of the page, how would I go about it?

This is not too much of a beginner's question, but it's not that easy to answer. The ads at the top, above the free or organic results are ads with the highest bids and the highest quality. Google has recently changed its formula for deciding which ads are placed there; check out this page: Inside AdWords: Upcoming change to the top ad placement formula. That change is now in effect.
