Default Onsite Advertiser Sign Up

I have seen a few posts saying that this can actually reduce your income and it should be turned off.

Does anyone have any actual statistics to back up or contradict these claims?

Is it a good idea to provide a separate link to allow advertisers to advertise directly on your site as explained at:-

?

IMO - if you had ad space for rent you would be better served to work directly with the advertiser and retain 100% of the revenue rather then give up control of the space to google.

I do like that idea..

Anyone had any positive or negative experiences of doing this?

Has anyone created a fantastic 'Advertise Here' page which had the advertisers flocking to them?

Here are a couple of examples:-

(Anyone have anything better?).

Has anyone used Quantcast to bring in direct advertisers?

No significant experiences good or bad to contribute. My guess is that there would be more trust in paying a well known search engine to run an ad as opposed to an individual website.
My gf offers ad space for sale (Handcrafted Beaded Jewelry by Jades Creations - Unique Designs in Handcrafted Beaded Jewelry) on her site. IMO it doesn't hurt to offer the space. I'd guess that the folks that would do best in offering ad space are those that run forums. Possibly you could incorporate a forum into your site.

But do yuo want the hassle of selling your own adverts, ensuring they are designed, etc?

You're selling space - the client provides the image/text designed to go in that space subject to your approval. Where on a page that space is and it's size should be predetermined by you ("rent THIS space" - or "your banner here") and not subject to negotiation. I don't see this as much of a hassle at all.

Well - I went ahead (about a month ago) and spent 20 minutes putting up a 'rent this space' type banner (see first link in my signature).
So far (about 50,000 visitors later) - no inquiries, but it costs me nothing to leave it there, so I'll leave it there and see how it goes....

If only that were true!

The company I work for has a website and it has a lot of spaces for sale. Most people haven't' a clue about designing ads, so they either ask our production guys (using MAC) to design them, or they use an agency which often send us utter crap which have to be put right.
