Default Google Adwords - Regional Campaign

I am running a regional campaign for a client. The client wants to target the south east of England.

Having used the Adwords regional checkbox, this defines all 50 million of England's population as one region. This is too broad as the client only wants to target the population within 1.5 hours drive of his south coast location.

I'm trying out a "cities" based campaign. Using this I've managed to include London (8 million) and Brighton, Crawley and Maidstone with populations between 150,000 and 250,000. This still ignores several million of the population of the south east of England. Does anyone know of a definitive list of towns covered by the Google Adwords cities service?

Isn't it possible to, ha, ha, do a Google search for the communities in S.E. England (especialy within 1.5 hours of the client's location). From this, I think you could create a keyword list accordingly (e.g. product/service in such-and-such a locale).

Default New feature

Kheun,

many thanks. I didn't know the "Customize" featured existed.

The system has additional functionality - you can draw a polygon on a map and include all ip addresses within the selected area.

The accuracy of the selection process ultimately depends upon how accurately the ip address physical location can be identified by Google, obviously this will throw up some errors.

Default Google UK regionalisation

I've tried all options, including customisation, but don't find it to be that effective. I think it suffers from the "jeez, are you from England? You must know..." approach.

For example, I had a campaign with a 30 mile radius around Portsmouth and still had sign ups from Northampton and Yorkshire.

For a list of towns/cities, try Wikipedia.

I focus on an even smaller region and I'm highly effective using the keywords of the local townships. Were you asking becuase the searches you feel you're targeting are broader terms than you can specify. Meaning they're searching from that region - and you're hoping to hit 'vacation rental' as a broad term specific to their region.

If google is that smart - someone let me know!

Default Geographic Confusion

Geography causes much confusion in UK:

I live about 40 miles north of London, on the borders of three counties: None of the local towns are dominant; we usually shop in the next county.

Many people travel long distances to their work. Many to London; others to various towns; some work locally.

My home location could be described by:

- Post Code (like zip code), but this defines my home location, not my daily travel pattern.
- County, but I'm on the borders of three;
- Local town, but which one?
- Region, but these are not standardized.

Different web-sites define my region of interest as:

UK; South; South-East; Home counties; Greater London; London; East; East Anglia; East Midlands; Midlands; etc. etc.; and that's still just my home location, not my daily travel pattern!

Much public transport, and many roads, are radial from London: It's far easier to travel in some directions than others.

Question:

When I "search" for a shop or service or job, which region is of interest?

Many government services are organised on county lines, but we get most commercial and leisure services from a different county.

ps. I sometimes "camp" in Portsmouth hotels while working there (120 miles away); often I'm working along-side people from Yorkshire. Perhaps those strange responses were relevant?
