Default Is Google AdWords bad for your website?

Hi

A prospective customer that I am currently negotiating with has been told by another web design firm that Google Adwords can affect your natural (unpaid listings).

Has anyone else found this or is it a load of rubbish? (or an SEO trying to score brownie points?)

Any help as always will be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Hi Debbie,

Long time no see:)
I think he is just saying that.. i never heard of this anywhere..and since no one heard of it..they are surely making it up. something like that would have spread around like mad if it was true.

thanks
Tala

Hi Tala

You're right, it has been a while. ;) Nice to speak to you again.

This guy apparently said that Google would obviously deny that having CPC would make any difference.

I just wondered if anyone had any evidence to support whether this claim was true or not.

I'm just curious now.

I'd actually heard the opposite, that using Adwords *helped* your rankings - personally I doubt it makes a difference either way.

I assume you mean natural google rankings?

Sounds like BS to me.

Google will claim the two efforts are completely independent, and I'm inclined to believe them.

I've seen a number of sites get top 3 natural rankings and also pay for high adwords listings.

In fact, on the flip side, it wouldn't do them any good to give AdWords advertisers a natural boost because if the advertisers didn't know they were getting it, they could discontinue adwords because their natural was suddenly so high.

Illogical, does not compute, BS.

With close to three years of "dabbling" in both SEO and PPC related to my site, I've yet to become convinced that there's the slightest connection between the two.
Perhaps if you manage to appear both ways in the top SERPs, you may be tempted to drop one of them, but I'll strongly advise against doing so.
People search and click in different ways and for different reasons. Thus, just be thankful for all your visitors regardless of how they reach you. In fact, even if you ask them which route they took, they're likely to not remember. What is important is that they ended up finding/learning what they wanted to know from your site and how and why it encouraged them to contact you further -- and SEO and PPC each have their own entirely separate and distinct means of pulling this trick off.

Default Lies, damn lies and Google myths

This is just another Google myth. I must hear one a day.

Adwords has no bearing on your organic results.
