Default Adsense with other ad servers

I apologize if this has been previously addressed, but I could not find any information while searching for an answer.

From what I understand, you are not allowed to serve other peoples ads on the same page as Google's ads.

What if you are serving your own ads? What if you sell your own ads on your site and they are not being served from a third party ad server?

Who's to say what the technical definition of an ad is? What if you just have links to other sites on your right side navigation? What if those links happen to look like an ad?

I understand that you cant serve ads from kanoodle or overture, but what about your own?

I guess the question will be, how will Google/AdSense differentiate between your ads and someone elses?

Might not be worth it.

I found a company that is using its own ad results along with google's ad results. Their web site is indeed.com. How are they getting away with this? Is this allowed by google adwords terms of service?
