I manage internet marketing for several websites, and one of the marketing tools I've used for a few years is AdWords. What I've discovered, though, is that when one website does poorly with a specific keyword, it's disabled from all of the sites permanently, even those that have done well.
For instance, I handled a website about a year ago for a Congress candidate, and one of his districts was Wilkes county, NC, so we used "wilkes" as a keyword. It had a poor click-through rate, and so "wilkes" was disabled. Now, I have a website for an upcoming wine festival in Wilkes, and would like to use the same keyword. But it is immediately disabled, even though it's never had a single impression. This is true for almost every variation I can think of, because I used all of those variations with the first campaign: "wilkes county," "wilkes nc," etc. As another example, I have 2 websites that used the keyphrase "nc wine" at the same time. One had a click-through rate of about 6%, and the other had a click through rate of about 1%. Both were disabled, even though the one had an acceptable response. This is just two examples of many; I've having this problem with about 7 different websites that compete for the same keywords, on about 50 different keywords. I've contacted Google, and all I get is a fairly generic reply stating that they can't help. Furthermore, they won't let me just close this account and start over, and I can't have more than 1 account. Does anyone else handle several websites like this? If so, what do you do? |

Its hard luck as soon as google does not earn enough money it will kill your keyword and there is not much you can do about I would suggest not using adwords full stop and look at alternatives

I dumped AdWords in favor of Overture 6 or 7 months ago. I just like their program better, I have never had a keyword suspended and they even have daily budgeting available, keeps them from sucking your wallet dry, like AdWords does.

Personaly use both Adwords and Overture, both are good at getting visitors to my clients sites. I prefer my Overture ads as they have more text, I prefer Adwords for niche 'odd' ads as its minimum is cheaper and I definately prefer Adwords for its report generation. Overture report generator is over elaborate and just doesn't give me the info I want easily and clearly, whilst Googl is click and its there. Gowilkes - Sorry I don't know the answer to your problem. I have multiple client campaings under one account but only one account. The question is if you use a different credit card to pay the bills would Google even notice you have 2 accounts and they can't stop you closing an account. Carju1

I manage several accounts in both Google Adwords and Overture and have never had a problem using the same keywords for more than one client.
If your spend is high enough I would recommend becoming a Google Advertising Professional. This means you can manage several seperate accounts from one pro-centre. You can even look at individual keywords and how they are performing for each client. I am suprised that you are unable to re-use disabled keywords but it is probably because you are managing everything from one account so Googles view would be that if it didn't work before then why should it now. Also, a bit of a tip for gowilkes, the keywords that you mentioned are very generic (which is one of the reasons the CTR was low) try adding additional words to make your ads more specific to a users search. For example use "wilkes wine festival" instead of just "wilkes" as what is the point of showing your ad to a whole load of people that aren't searching for that product. |

I have a single Adwords account through which I manage 5000+ Keywords for 4 different websites.
I have never experienced the phemomen you are describing. I have keywords that work well for some ads and not for others throughout the account. One thing that I have done is set things up this way: 1 Account 4 Campaigns 5-20 Ad Groups under each of the campaigns. I have no problem with crossover of keywords or using the same keyword in more than one campaign. I've also resumed disable keywords without a problem. |
