Youtube module tutorial

Hi all, I want to build (from scratch) a youtube type module for my site. I don't know where to start. I have found Flowplayer and found this http://tinyurl.com/6lu2ps which is great but is there a tutorial out there to help me build the whole thing myself? I wan't to do this so I can fully understand how it works.

I have some idea of ffmpeg and some experience of php but am still learning.
