I agree, paypal is way overrated for what they do... the REALLY need a simpler solution. Authorize.net and others use 1 PHP file for their transactions... PayPal has all this complex logic. I understand it's good practice, but somewhere the extensability of it all is just to much for most people.
In my opinion, if they wrote a very simple API system that lots of developers could easily catch onto, they woudl increase their shopping cart integration and overall marketshare compared to what they have...
I think in the end, the SOAP or NVP are really close, you just package up the variables and send with the URL rather than mine using a call... it's just so much stuff to sift through..
