Default Adobe says no to Linux Flash 9 alpha

Cross your fingers and hope for the beta version, because Flash Player 9 for Linux looks like it's on the same schedule as Windows Vista, targeted for early 2007.

Default Tired of waiting for Adobe

I for one am sick and tired of waiting for Adobe to release a new version of FlashPlayer for linux.

If they are going to make us wait maybe they should hold back the Mac and Windows versions until they have all the major ports done. Fat chance, MS is influncing it I'm sure.

After the wait for Flashplayer 8, then 8.5 and now 9, I've decided to start a campaign against Adobe and try to get as many linux users to push the internet sites they frequent to either refuse to upgrade to any further versions of FlashPlayer (or better yet roll back current versions) until Adobe releases v9 for linux or to stop using flash and convert to realplayer or another common format all platforms can view w/o this constant lag of Adobe.

By the time FlashPlayer 9 for linux is done they'll be rolling out FlashPlayer 10 for Win/Mac platforms.

Yeah, this annoys me to no end. Especially since the latest "official" version of Linux Flash (7.0.68.0, compiled on July 26th and released on ... September 12th?!) still has the audio sync bug on the few videos it's still capable of playing.

At some point I finally broke down and installed IE 6 and Flash 9 on my Ubuntu desktop (using wine). Here's a nifty little script that works great if you want to give this a try.

Ultimately I'm waiting for the day when gnash becomes fully usable, so that we no longer need to spend years waiting for the "latest" closed-source features from Macromedia/Adobe.

Dave.

geez guys, don't be so hateful. If you were in the hot seat making the final decisions on a multi-million dollar company with all the same information as them, 95% sure you would make the same decisions. All in good time.

Following your advice, we would still be in dos waiting for the final versions of O.S.'s to be made, including linux, which is not perfect either...

I for one am glad we get what is made, when we get it. Besides, don't like it, I don't see you running a multi-million dollar competitor against them? maybe you should get involved? or say geeze, thanks guys, your smarter than me for making something that I can't make...

Not trying to be hateful... we host Flash videos here, and nearly 20% of our visitors are running Linux. So we're not talking about a small market. If one out of every 5 visitors can't watch our videos, then that's a major problem.

It'd really be nice if Adobe would do the same thing as companies like Sun, Netscape and Real by releasing the source for their Linux Flash player and allowing the community to fix and maintain it.

Anyway, it turns out that Adobe did (finally) release a 9.0 beta, so the point is now rather moot. Of course, it's still closed source (and therefore x86-only) and filled with bugs, but at least it's not as broken as the 7.X releases were.

Dave.
