Problem Loading Dynamic Text into movie clip

ok so check it out, what i want to do is very basic and yet i cant get it to work

i wanna load dynamic text from a txt file into a movie clip when it comes to an event

i have tried
loadVariables("channelnews.txt", "_root");
and it will work as long as it stays inside the root but if i try to load it from a movie clip called contacts i decide to change the root, for example
loadVariables("channelnews.txt", "contacts");
then i tried
loadVariables("channelnews.txt", "this.contacts");
iam pretty sure iam not using the right actionscript coding, can you help? any help is apreciated.
