Is Magentos current stance that you still need a dedicated server?
They've had some performance issues, but magento is a lot more feature rich than Zen/OSCommerce. We held off on the switch to Magento because of perfomance issues, and they upped the requirement of PHP to 5.2, which my current solution doesn't meet. Other than that, I'd agree, but double check the server requirements before you jump in with both feet. I've also heard great things about 1automationwiz from the stompernet crew, but I've never used the cart myself On a side note: The lack of a decent stand alone shopping cart has been very frustrating, prompting our company to research the feasiblity of developing our own shopping cart solution that is super fast, highly customizable and feature rich. But the forcast date would be 18-24 months out. Matt |

Magento - Home - eCommerce Software for Growth, Powered by Open Source is good but there is a steep learning curve for custom development and little documentation (thats up-to-date) but there is a growing community and I would recommend you find a freelancer to help you.
Only problem is tracking inventory for stock options which is critical for some users. |

We use RomanCart (RomanCart Shopping Cart) and found it it be very easy to use. It contains many features and you can purchase a different level of subscription depending on what features you need. Support is very good (both telephone and email) and there is a very helpful and friendly user forum.

Try doing the following search in Google: site:design-a-cushions.co.uk You will find it doesnt know anything about your products, they are not listed, and if they are not listed people wont find them, and therefore they wont buy them! If you contrast that with the following search on a small Ecommerce website we designed with 200 odd products listed, you will find each product has its own entry in the search engines...: site:bluzooaquatics.co.uk for more details see Freelance website designers - Shopping carts, web page design, London, Essex Joe |

I have found Virtuemart a great option.
Better and easier to use than osCommerce, good downloads capability, and can be fully integrated with Joomla if you want more than just a cart. |

We use Monster MarketPlace which is owned by Network Solutions. I use the Pro Version because I have thousands of products but they do have smaller versions.
The Tech Support is exemplary. I can't imagine using a different cart.

I suggest you use an open source shopping cart and get some professional support from their support team. It's often affordable and suitable for your specific online shops.

I don't know how to define a good reputable shopping cart. But a good reputable service from the shopping cart support team is very important.

I have a site that uses Storefront Software by LaGarde, who were recently bought out of bankruptcy by Dydacomp. I have heard good things about Dydacomp, but ever since LaGarde started going down in December, service has been very troublesome. We have been down 6 days out of 60! (and still down today) Tech support is unresponsive in time of crisis. We are looking to move also.

I'm not a big fan of DYI carts. There can be a lot of upkeep making sure everything is up to date, security, etc. Plus, going with a hosted cart negates your role as a web dev and admin. You can focus on the store, SEO, sourcing and customer service with that extra time.
I like these three hosted carts: Volusion 3DCart InstanteStore I'd review each of them and see which one has the features you need. If you have any specific questions, feel free to give me a shout. Last edited by ottoskorzeny; 02-24-2009 at 01:36 PM. |

I've used Magento on shared hosting for Sea Witch Antiques and for Jacksonville NC Furniture as well as dedicated hosting. If you have a solid hosting source and setup Magento correctly, it can do great things and be very responsive.

Hi Deb,
If it's still up-to-date and you want to move from your oscommerce to the shopping cart of your choice i would like to share with you about a web service that will make it a piece of cake. Cart2cart service will automate your data migration and guarantee all data is accurately migrated (products, customers, images - everything) Just google it! |

We have multiple Magento sites that our clients are using that are performing quite well and ranking top 10 on both Google and Yahoo. As for performance, visit some of our client sites to see for yourself.

There's a great number of solutions out there, and, since your characteristics are quite common, my advice is to check some demos of carts you find, for example. via corresponding Google queries, ask some questions to their sales staff and see which one you prefer. It's a very basic strategy, but a honest one.
CS-Cart has a convenient, often AJAX-based interface, so we'd appreciate if you could consider us as an option.

We also use X-cart. While I have nothing to compare it to, it has indeed a lot of bells and whistles and we have added on a few things. We are not happy with the zoom function, which we added on. it takes too long to load the larger images. |
