Default Developing and promoting a website

I am not a technology guy and hence like to learn few tricks of the trade in website development and promotion. I want to develop a website and would like to know if there is any book or literature that would provide a detailed inputs on what are the do's and donts in website development and promotion, how to make it search friendly, market it etc

You won't get all of that from a book as each topic is a book all by itself. Plus a lot of it is constantly changing and evolving. You can only get the kind of information you seek from Communities like WebProWorld and SitePoint. You'll need to visit them regularly and participate to start to grow your knowledge.

Long before a book is finished being published, the information regarding SEO is out of date. I'd agree that forums are the best place for up to date info.

If you want a jump start, you could always head to San Jose for SES. Then you can keep up with the forums.
