Default Credit Card Processing for 1 item

My client would like to sell one item on his website and be able to accept credit card payments from anywhere in the world. Not just PayPal. I have created 1 page for his product Barnacle Buster and put it on his existing website Carbon Fiber Props for now. The product will have it's own site later.

I've been reading so much about processing services, merchant accounts & gateways that I have no idea what I actually need.

Can anyone tell me what would work for what I want to accomplish or point me in the right direction?
I would appreciate any advice offered.
Thanks

Q. Do I need access to a gateway and a merchant account?

A. Yes, web-hosting companies e.g. Yahoo already bundle access to a gateway in their Yahoo store. However, many other stores do not. AuthorizeNet is the gateway provider of choice for many web-hosting companies. An excellent analogy is to think of the gateway as an electronic freeway and your merchant processing account as the auto.

Step one, find out if your webhosting company is compatable with Authorizenet.

If you need more help, please drop me a line.

Authorizenet is a good gateway although some people have problems with it. There are so many processors out there the only way to make an intelligent decision is to start searching and write down various options such as cost per transaction and ease of integration. If you can, talk to people who are using the one you are interested in and get their feedback.
