Credit Card Security Requirement Looms

Smaller businesses are subject to same requirements as larger retailers, and the same June 30 deadline.

Visa USA and MasterCard International want e-commerce companies, and not just the biggest ones, to comply with its security standards.

If a company does business online, and handles 20,000 to 6 million transactions in a year, then they must meet those standards.

Lack of people, time, and money will not be an excuse for non-compliance. Businesses will have to complete annual compliance paperwork, and complement that with reports on third party security assessments of their networks.

"We were kind of caught off guard by this program, like quite a few other merchants have been," said Gary Praegitzer, network administrator for security at Jelly Belly Candy Co. in a Wall Street Journal story. "I'm not sure why they're (Visa and MasterCard) not making people more aware.

This is really geared more for B&M merchants not e-commerce merchants. At least, that is my understanding.

We got contacted about this (not B&M but E-Commerce), and we used ScanAlert to generate a report that seemed to satisfy most of it. The paperwork was a pain, but not too difficult.
