We started 6 years ago with Paymentech and they were the worse. We then moved to Wells and although their service was better their pricing was still too high. Two years ago we founded EmerchantsGroup and a merchant processing program.

It all depends on where you are located and what you are selling.

If you are in the United States with volume being more than $1,000, a merchant account is usually advisable. You might also consider paypal in conjunction with a merchant account.

The gateway is also very important. Three main gateways in the United States is Verisign, LinkPoint, and Authorizenet.com. The monthly fees can range usually from $15.00-$75 a month. Some gateways do not charge you a transaction fee and some might give you a few for free a month. This transaction fee is also on top of what you will be paying the merchant account processor (MAP).

If you are worried about fraud, check out Verisign. They have some great fraud tools to add onto your services. If you are worried about downtime on the gateway, check out Verisign or LinkPoint. All three gateways also offer you an API to capture and process credit cards on your secure website

You may want to take a look at CDG Commerce. They are offering a great new promotion for internet businesses that features very low pricing and some of the best features in the business.

Take a look at the promotional link: http://www.cdgcommerce.com/cdg2005promo/

You will need that link if you want to apply with the special 2.35% + 0.35 per transaction rates.

With the service, you receive access to the ground breaking Chargeback Defender, feature packed Merchant Portal, FREE FraudGate fraud protection, and much more.

If you have any questions about the service, please feel free to PM me or post here and I'll gladly assist you.

We've actually helped merchants that have used Paymentech before and have actually switched from Wells Fargo to them because of services issue with Wells... So there is no one size fits all solution, both of these companies are fairly reliable so if you deal with them or a partner of theirs just be sure that you get the solution that works best for you and understand the rates and terms.

On the contrary 2checkout.com is a 3rd party provider and thus comes with higher percentage rates. If you can get a real merchant account from a provider I'd go with one.
