Default 100 Year domain name registration

Our friends at Network Solutions have done it again. They are now offering 100 year domain registration. Now cybersquatters dont have to be worried about renewing their unused domains anymore. Now the cybersquatters just have to sit back and wait for someone that has a legitimate use for the name to contact them. Now since there is no hope of the name expiring in our lifetime we may end up having to take out a bank loan to buy a name we may want in a few years.

Am I just being unreasonable or does anyone else not like the idea of 100 year domain registration either?

Joe

Default Good idea - To increase their Net-income!

Good idea, for them to find a Ne(e)t solution. To grab the $$$ even before the sun rises! Howlong you are going to survive is not the the question; Howlong they are going to survive in this field and biz.is a point you shold check.

Network solution would be perfect for one, if there is a leased life! :)

Default good idea

I think that if you have the foresight and are willing to invest into such a thing then it's a good thing. But we will never know what the future holds. 100 years. Hmmm with netsol rates, they will make a killing on those prices. Nowadays other companies have so many cheaper alternatives I would rather purchase a 100 year domain from. Maybe in 50 years, a domain might only cost $1. Who knows?

The again the world might come to an end before then. Hahahah.

Default One year guarantee, 100 yrs programme!

This reminds me an actual purchase I made few yeears ago - a wrist watch!

The brochure states: programmed calander for 100 years, Rust free material to withstand any climatic disturbance, made from strong materials of tomorrow's technology (!?), inbuilt time & date adjuster for 100 years, sleek, nice look etc & etl.

And the fine printe that read: "One year Guarantee"! from the date of purchase.

Who knows, tomorrow the web site hosting might fall down to $1 for a couple of years!

Default OH, it's gone!

EJRS.COM

Ha, Ha, the wrist watch fooled the maker too! It did work for three full years, (decieved the Guarantee period stipulation) without any trouble. Alas! my bad "time" did'nt allow me to see it again. I lost it during a train journey, the one who picked it then must be knowing its fate!

What a pity. Looks like you let time slip between your fingers that time (bad pun).

I do like the thing about time being like gold... Good one.

Default mixed feelings

I have mixed feelings about this, even though I voted for it.

My thoughts:

1). It helps the forgetful people who never remember to renew their domain names they have rights to. (I know the domain law stipulates once it is renewed anyone has "rights" to that domain name.)

2). As posted above it helps the cybersquatters.

3). Since it came from Netsol, IMO it is obviously a marketing ploy to gain new customers. Since a lot of "experienced" domainers (not a word I know), are fed up with Netsol and just go with a higher quality registar with lower prices.

Why would anyone in their right mind buy from NetSol under any circumstances? I shudder at the thought.

As for 100 years - the option would be nice, but I'd personally never pay that far in advance. There is no way to know which way the wind will blow. Most likely we'll have something else in place long before that 100 years ever comes up. I like 100 year leases for land, not domain names.

The name is yours as long as you manage to renew when it is due. You could always set a reminder to renew a year before expiration, or even five years before, but pay in advance for 100 years? LOL, no way. That's just a good way to tie up some money, IMO.

Default not a chance

look at how things have changed in the last 5 years...

There was a time when Netsol was the only game in town and 35/year seemed reasonable. Since then they've been bought out and changed beyond recognition. Who knows what will even happen with naming protocols... in 10 years dot anything may be obsolete.

Best bet for now is keep track of your domains and pay for the renewal on time.

Well, in reality this is really just a gimmick that almost no one will ever use anyway, but even still I couldn't imagine this service having any sort of impact on cybersquatting either way.

Let's be honest, is anyone really going to invest $1,000 upfront for 100 years of registration to cybersquat? Anyone can register a domain for 10 years with any registrar - and in internet time that might as well be 100 years.

The only benefit this could ever have to anyone would be to extremely large companies like Microsoft, who sometimes forget to renew some of their lesser used Domain names like passport.com.... ;)

Realistically, this service is pretty much useless to everyone else.

Craig

I think that if domains were considered as real
properties are and we could be financed with
mortgages based on the internet property we have
so there would be sense in registering for 100
years and more.

As the reality is not this way I will not spend my
money in advance for a 100 year registration for
sure.

Default 100 Year Gimmick

As Craig said, this 100 year idea is an over-the-top marketing gimmick to bring traffic to their site. I don't think ICANN would approve of the idea because it's unnecessary.

I don't how anyone could forget to renew their domain name, because the expiration process typically lasts 80 days. Domain name companies are required by law to notify the domain name owner at least three times that the name is about to expire, then there is 1 to 45 day period before your domain is put on hold in a 30 day period called "Redemption Grace Period," and then there is a 5 day period called "5 Day Registry Hold," - AND THEN - if you haven't renewed the name it is made available to be purchased by someone else.

For a breakdown of this process look here:
https://www.snapnames.com/backorder.sn?aff=229#
Click on "Understand the Life of a Domain Name" at the top of the page.

This 100 year marketing gimmick reminds me of a hosting company in my town that claims if you purchase your domain name from them you will own that domain "for a lifetime" - but there is a catch -you must host your site with them "forever." A very clever ploy. They don't mention the part about "host with them forever" until after you've salivated over the amazing idea of a owning a domain for a lifetime. The domain is also advertised as "free" with your hosting account. The domain name is not only for a lifetime, but it's also free! Geez. Newbies beware.

In other words they will renew your domain name for you each year as long as you host your site with them. Heck, you can renew your domain yourself. It's not hard to do.

A little research goes a long way.
