A web address has more "resonance" when it is generically named, one expert has suggested in an article for AGIP News.
The site reports that executive manager of the Palestinian National Internet Naming Authority, Marwan Radwan, said that since 2001, ambitious web entrepreneurs have begun to realise the value of generic domain names and embarked on what is now a lucrative industry.
He added that such pioneers began to seek out web addresses that had the kind of "resonance" that would prove a valuable commodity for advertising and marketing.
"These registrants were motivated to locate generic domain names … which were compelling and obvious [so] that people would use [them] to navigate the web and to then monetise the traffic … generated through paid-search advertising," he said.
Earlier this month, the website reported that a domain name company named Tucows now owned more than 65 per cent of the surnames of North America as registered addresses.
