My domain business started to turn a profit recently and I wanted to share some lessons.
When you get started and register and buy a bunch of names you soon realize that the 100-200 names you acquired takes some thousands of dollars a year to own/renew. Domain selling is a slow process so you goal must be to minimize the losses until you get into profits.
The key is to take domain parking seriously from the beginning. I did that when I got started over 2 years ago - but I wasnt impressed with the income..and I wasnt alone. THE people I referred werent making much either. Then along came NameDrive. I moved a few names there and after initial success I moved more. I was making good money. Then I started to refer people since I liked it so much. Sure enough the people I referred were making money too...which was all the proof I needed. Now in just 10 months just my referral income to NameDrive is paying my whole domain 240 name portfolio upkeep fee and then some.
Another lesson is to pay as little as possible for the names and the renewals. Sounds pretty self-explanatory but I was paying some $8-9 a name for a long time and thats just bad business. A big turning point in my domain sales business came when I read Edwin Johns How I sell my domain names. See my report:
How I sell ebook report I have made some pretty big domain sales since and it helped me see and treat my domain hobby as a real business.
