Default Transfering Bought Domain Name

I found a domain for sale I may be interested in. The person with the domain asked for their price plus an escrow service fee of US$30 that must be applied to the final price of the domain name. "Please set up an account with Domain Contender at http://www.domaincontender.com/signup/ and let us know what your username is so that we can have the domain transferred into this account. "

I have never used Domain Contender, is this a trustworthy company? I would feel more comfortable with a more well known domain registrar.

Is there a risk or does this sound OK?

I think I might be more concerned with the escrow company, since they are holding the money.
Tell the seller, you prefer to transfer the domain to ABC registrar (which ever one you prefer)

I don't see why the domain owner will care

Default they are not ICANN registeres

The company is not ICANN registered but they have a security certificate from verisign which i think is a good point, but a domain registrar should be a ICANN registered, u can create ur a/c in enom which is free and ask him to transfer the domain into that a/c

Actually, Verisign has come under intense criticism because anyone can get a certificate from them. They do not check anything out, their certificate just says that they 'gaurantee your identity.

It does not say you are ethical. Anyone who is not faking their identity can get a certificate, but it means little more than 'Yes, Verisign gaurantees www.some_domain. biz is who they say they are'.

It is like an electronic signature, or security certificate you can get for your emails. I send an email using one account I have a cert. for, and the recievers see that it is from me, not a spammer of spoofer.
But I could, if I wanted to, send my own malicious code and infect my friends computers, or anyone else who thinks because I have a certificate, I am safe.

Mostly, though, they do convey a sense of security, and not many people that are fraud artisits are going to get their identity registered!

I would listen to above, if there is all this complicated, seemingly unnecessary steps involved, get more gaurantees. Domains can be transfered without hassle, all they (the sellers) have to do is say 'okay' and whoever you use to register the domain for you can then proceed. All the hoople is not necessary, and is suspicious, IMO :O)

they are a registered registrar:

http://www.internic.net/registrars/registrar-637.html

But that, sadly, doesn't mean anything. They are way up on the list of "domain squatters", and there doesn't seem to be much enforcement on the "registrars shouldn't OWN domain names" rules.

Right now, they all (including NETSOL) hide behind the nebulous "registrar hold", which is really a wild-west thing. ICANN (YOUCANT) doesn't seem to be real active in this area - they have trouble recruiting work group members to address it - and you can bet that none of the registrars will stand behind any rule that limits their revenue streams.
