Default Domain Names For Sale

I have been always amazed as to what others ask for a domain name. I don't understand this part, domain 4 sale.

Does it have to do with the have's and the have nots?

I looked for a domain for an organziation that wanted one. I tired all kinds of ways of looking one up for them. They had 4 little letters. Wouldn't you know it, they all were gone. .com, .info, .org, .net to name a few. Than I found one that was for sale. They started out by asking me what I would offer. They blew me off and a few months later said the same thing. I gave them the first answer that I game the first time. This time the price came down.

Since than this domain as gone over seas to some company. I picked a domain that was told to me that I might try. Got it and now the orgranzastion uses that instead of the 4 letters they wanted.

Why would someone buy a domain name? In fact why buy it for 100's or even 1000's of dollars? Is it that cheap to register a domain name and keep it for awhile in hopes of selling it?

What are your thoughts on this?

Default it called speculating isnt it

it's called domain speculating isnt it and I think all domainers are "guilty" of it. The reason the listing/asking prices are high is because as a seller you can always go down, hard to go back up. Just selling one domain at asking can pay for years of name renewing and speculating. It's unfortunate that so many names are just sitting there. But you can always go around a name and with a little creativity score a better domain for just $6 or whatever you are paying.
As ebay founder Pierre Omidyar says: an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Cheers
