Default Renewal of Domain Name

We were discussing the renewal of a client's domain name the other day. Someone said "what happens if you don't renew the domain name? Does the website simply disappear? I have heard that nothing happens, and that these renewals are just a scam". I know that there has been some scam problems with domain name renewals, but if the notice is legitimate, and you ignore it - what happens?

Some renewal offers may be a scam, but if a domain names is due to expire you should renew it if you want to retain registration of the name. Your ownership to the domain registration will lapse after the renewal date plus whatever grace period the registrar may give you (30 days or so). If there is a website associated with the domain name, it too will eventually go offline if the domain is not renewed.

Some renewal offers may be a scam, but you cannot retain ownership of a domain and keep the website live unless you renew it when it's due.

Peace,

The domain if not renewed will expire the nameservers immediately upon renewal expiration time, Thus rendering the website useless. You will however have 30-45 days depending on registrar to renew the name but at a higher cost.

So yes if you do not renew the expiration date and time will be the last time you see your site online with that address, If you dont eventually end up renewing the name and if it gets any kind of traffic it will be snapped and in no time will point to an affiliate revenue site as well as be listed for sale by a new owner

Not renewing your domain is like leaving your purse/wallet in the middle of a parking lot.

Domain names are more like renting than ownership, because you only get to keep it as long as you keep paying for it. Best to pay for several years at a time than yearly, if the money's in your pocket to do so.

But yes beware -- make sure it is YOUR registrar you signed up with that is contacting you about renewing. They will most likely contact you by email, not postal mail (at least in my experiences). I've received postal mailings from other companies informing me my domain is about ready to expire, saying I should renew with THEM and get a good deal. Some are legit, some aren't. Best to renew with your own registrar and transfer it yourself to another company if you find a better deal on your own, rather than respond to a mailing from a company you don't know.
