curious, what the use of keep domain name for long term?

I was looking for domain name to register, ofcourse most the names i want are already register. Some of the name i want doesn't have anything but search link ads seeq.com etc. And another thing I found out was most of this domain names are register 6 or 7 years ago. My question whats the use of registering a domain name and don't use it for anything except to put search ads etc. I try to contact several owners but they never reply back than ,I mean whats the value if you are not goin to sell it or use it?

Also another question I found out most of the domain name are register by registrats fabulous.com??? is this domain registering company and why do people use this company?

Many domains/sites are earning money with that simple ads. If they have traffic (mostly from previous site that went off) they can (mis)use it in many ways.
Also, domains are assets just like any other property (well almost, you never "own" a domain name). You never know when and if their value will skyrocketed.

Fabulous is a kind of place where you can park your otherwise unused (undeveloped) domains and still get something out of it through advertisers.
For Fabulous you need at least 70-80 domains to be able to use their services.
Similar services for small number of domains are offered by Sedo, Afternic, etc.

Squatters: the professional "lingo" term in this field that describes one who registers a domain name and holds it with the intent of selling it later at a higher price.

The rational is comparable to playing the stock market, in a way. Buy one now, and wait until the value goes up enough to a satisfactory price and make a profit. A word or phrase that doesn't make sense now may become a popular term/catch phrase in the future. Folks may want that name.

Most people would prefer the term "Investor" :)
Squatter (or cyber squatter) gives illegal connotations. There's nothing wrong with buying and selling domain names unless the domain infringes on a registered trademark.

Sometimes it takes time for domain names to appreciate in value, much like stocks as jawn_tech suggests. Business.com first sold for something like $150,000. 5 years later it was $7 million.

Our company wants to be that someone for a couple of unused domains. The problem is we can't get a resposnse from the owner. I'm sure they would make more money selling the domains then by the ads they currently have.

i don't think return on domain would be that great if you keep the domain name for years without doin anything. most of the domains names owner never reply or ask ridiculosy amount for a name thats not even popular. anyway this is a free economic so you can do whatever you want. but eventually my company decided not to waste thousand $$$ on a domain instead we would spend same money on advertising and register a easy to use and remember domain name.

Man, do I wish I sold my baseball cards when they were in their prime.

On a more serious note, hanging onto a domain name long term is also an effective means to preventing people from using a drop-catcher to register it and poach any traffic you may still have coming in.
