.net domain names

Could you please clear my mind regarding domain name extensions? My question is - is it worth to buy domain names with .net extensions? Does the extension make difference for Yahoo and Google? Let's say there are three domain names www.mydomain.com, www.mydomain.net and www.mydomain.us. If they are promoted equally, which one will show up in the search results first.

I think search engines do not make differences about the tld of a domain.

Sure fact is that surfers normally associate the .com tld to a domain name as most of the sites use that one.

I like a lot also .net domain names and found many useful sites using it.

Open source projects many times prefer the .org tld for their websites.

I don't think the extension is a big factor in search rankings. It's more a factor for branding. .Com is easiest to remember and will get you more if you ever want to sell it. If you are purely going for traffic and clicks, getting the right KWs even if you have to settle for a .net or .us may give you a slight boost. .info is starting to get pretty popular if you get a good single word or descriptive phrase too.

This is just IMHO so before you make a buying decision, do some more research first.

Search engines are blind to a domain's extension(at least for now).

Personally, I would rather go with an .info than a .net :) Holds more potential.

I do not agree with you.
Of course it is my personal opinion.
I don't see the potential of a .net there.
I find rather ridiculous the .name and .info tlds, that are even longer than .com or .net or .org
I neither believe a lot in .biz.

Looks like I have to make some clarifications :)

The thread starter was asking if "is it worth to buy domain names with .net extensions?"

I'm assuming that the .com is already taken. So I opined that I would rather have the .info than the .net version of the same domain. This is because .info is posting stronger prices in the domain market than .net. This is of course, assuming that the thread starter is concerned with the re-sale value of the domain :)

If search engine position is the sole concern and not resale value of the domain, the extension doesn't matter. Search engine spiders don't take the extension into consideration.

And regarding the .name extension, I still can't believe how they allowed this one. People already know that it's a domain "name". Why do we need .name? Unless all domains with this extension be restricted to names. Which we all know is not the case :)

Actually, it was not that I just thought about buying .net domain. I wanted to undestand if the extension plays a big role in search engines and the potential of different domain extensions. I think that from you discussion I've got more or less clear idea about it. I see that the opinions about the future of .name, .info and .net are different. I am not into the domain game (yet!), I am a web developer, but reading your thread I am getting closer and closer to it. Sounds really fascinating. I am trying to get more information about domain names before getting into the game.
