Default HTTP vs HTTPS speed

I understand that HTTPS is slower than HTTP - does anyone know by what percentage?

The above link describes it as about 5 times slower. Although how they came up with that figure I don't know. I would think that it would depend on some factors though. One of which being level of encryption. Other determining factors could be what kind of hardware you have. Your available bandwidth, etc.
Do a google search on https slower than http. There are lots of opinions.
