Default My Processor is so fast it caught on fiiiiuh!

I thought this topic might be good for grins. I would really like to post a topic like that someday and have it be literal.

OK Lets say you are building a system for you. You want to be the biggest bad *ss in town. You have right around 800 bucks. You already have your case, HDD, and Burner. Essentially all you need now is Motherboard, Processor, and Ram.

What is your ultimate configuration? Keep in mind the new Athlon 64 FX is out.

We all know this topic could easily turn into an AMD vs INTEL battle so lets stay clear of that and just focus on what you would build not what other people should build.

Default Hyperthreading a must

I would have to mention that Hyperthreading would be a must. Is there any front end buses faster then 800Mhz?

Well if this were for myself...

I'ld get myself an Intel D875PBZLK Mainboard

CHIPSET - Intel 82875 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) with AHA (Accelerated Hub Architecture) bus.
Intel 82801ER I/O Controller Hub (ICH2) with Accelerated Hub Architecture bus and Intel 82802AC Firmware Hub (FWH). Intel ICH5R I/O Controller Hub.

MEMORY - (4) 184-pin DIMM connectors supporting up to four double-sided DIMMs. DDR400 SDRAM Memory (when used with Intel processor with 800-MHz system bus). DDR333 SDRAM Memory (when used with Intel processor with 800-MHz or 533-MHz system bus). ECC or Non-ECC RAM, 2.5V. Dual and single-channel operation support.

SLOTS - Integrated super I/O LPC bus controller supports
(5) 32-bit PCI Local Bus v2.2 slots
(1) 32-bit Universal 1.5V or 0.8V AGP 3.0 connector supporting up to AGP8X.

PCI IDE - (2) Serial-ATA 150 ports with Intel RAID 0 support, also supports Ultra ATA100/66.

I/O PORTS- Integrated Super I/O bus controller supports (1) 9-pin Serial port
(1) Parallel port
(2) PS/2 ports for Keyboard and mouse
(1) 1000BaseT/RJ45 port Integrated ICH5R controllers support
(6) USB 2.0 back panel ports (one quad & one dual stack)
(2) USB 2.0 front panel ports (via header requiring cable to front panel)

Then I'ld put in a BX80532PG3000D Boxed 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 478 PIN, FCPGA2 Processor w/512k cache. 800MHz Front Side BUS.

with pair of 400X64C3AK21G 400MHz DDR Non-ECC CL3 (3-3-3) DIMMs Totaling 1GB of RAM

But I over spent your budget of $800 by $111
So I guess I'ld cut the CPU down to a BX80532PG2800D Boxed 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 478 PIN, FCPGA2 Processor w/512k cache. 800MHz Front Side BUS, which would save me $169... Totaling $742....

Now you didn't mention a video card...
For that I'ld use no less than the Radeon 9200 w/128MB which would still give me a total of about $849...

Even though I'ld prefer the Radeon 9600 PRO,
But that would put me way over budget by $150...

(I should mention that I like using ATI video cards for the simple reason that they come with the DVD decoder software needed to play back DVD video... When using the less expensive third party brands (FIC, Saphire or Connect 3D) that use the ATI chipset you need to purchase the decoder from another source. These decoders will actually increase the overall cost by approx $50, where they are bundled with the ATI brand video product)

Default You devil!

This ought to cover the basics. All components here are very overclockable as well:

ASUS P4C 800 Deluxe (dual channel, AGP 8X, SATA, etc.)
- I875PE chipset
- AI Audio
- ADI AD1985 SoundMAX 6-channel CODEC
- Audio Sensing and Enumeration Technology support S/PDIF out interface
-Storage South Bridge:
- 2 x UltraDMA 100
- 2 x Serial ATA
- Promise 20378 RAID controller (optional):
- 1 x UltraDMA 133 support two hard drives
- 2 x Serial ATA
- RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, Multiple RAID
-AI NET (Gigabit LAN)
The AI Series supports Gigabit LAN by integrating the 3COM 3C940 controller, equipped with a unique net-diagnosing utility-- VCT (Virtual Cable Tester). The controller intelligently detects net connection status up to 100 meters from a remote location and reports the distance of bad cable.
-P4C800 Deluxe also integrates artificial intelligent features such as net-diagnosing utility, audio-jack sensing technology, auto-adjusting CPU Fan and more

Pentium4 2.6C (for the hyperthreading technology)

Kingston HyperX PC3200 2 x 256 (or OCZ Dual channel optimized)

Sapphire Radeon 9800 (get samsung 2.8 micron DDR and it easily will perform like the 9800 Pro, probably will anyways - overclocks to 480Mhz with 3.3)

Oh Yeah! Total cost = $820 US !!!
This system would be just FINE! even stock.
I currently run an XP1700+ on GigaByte GA7 V8X set to 333FSB (x 4.25) and get temp of 28C and memory read of 2400 Mb per s. with generic 2700 (512 MB).
I'm not sure what to go with as far as AMD vs Intel anyways - they both have their respective strengths.
We should have a tech category in the forum - sauldam?

Interesting choices so far. I must be used to wholesale prices because I parted out this.

Asus P4C800-E Deluxe - 176.00
P4 - 3.2G 800FSB Boxed - 408.00
2 1GB PC3200 Sticks (Dual Channel Mode) - 135.00

Grand Total 719.00

That leaves me 81.00 for a spindle of DVD media! :)

Default Funny, isn't it...

I jsut realized that as I was hitting the'submit' button but I was hoping that you wouldn't notice ;0)

My only concern then is... The Wife And Kids! Better get them something! I am single myself but I've heard stories...

Seriously, I am looking to upgrade in about 4 - 6 months, but just MoBo and CPU on a budget of around $400 US. I'm also looking at some of the Opteron line and dual processor board as I am not a gamer. I'm interested in what future offerrings from the nForce gang will have as afr as chipsets. Still, hyperthreading is desireable for development and design stuff - i.e. Dreamweaver + Flash + Photoshop + 2 browsers running (not to mention Outlook) so Intel is nice... for a price!

I would stick with the ATI chip set set...

Was just to an Intel Cannel Conference where the plan seems to be leaning towards moving to the PCI Extended bus for video, which will allow for a much higher transfer level. More than what could ever be reached with AGP.

Expect this to start showing up in their Mainboard that integrate the video...

It was said that ATI is the only developer currently developing a card designed for the slot.

With this design in mind, Intel boards will have 2 PCIE slots, one intended for the video and the other would be needed if you wanted to add the gigabit lan...

Change is comming... It will be exciting to see what all happens next year.

As far as Steves price on the 3.2 GHz 800 core P4...
You should get a couple from him... He's quoting about $250 bellow cost as of 2 minutes ago. :)

Default Again?

This is a good topic, Steve!

First I want to concur on your prices, Steve. They are right in line with my supplier's retail here in Canada. Stuff is getting cheaper fast.In 10 months my system went from $800 CDN retail to almost obsolete and worth about $350 CDN now (MoBo, HDD, Vid card, processor, memory).

I will also be looking to run Apache and IIS on my system (along with the above posted applications) so I'm thinking server board stuff, plus AMD core's have 32 and 64 bit architecture - thus the Opteron consideration. $800 US equals about $1100 CDN right now and is a good price range for a practicle upgrade. I'm also interested in other's opinions.

From the sounds of it a good Intel board would be ideal for you. :)

Steve

I was going to mention...

I took a peek at your Liquid site, your forum should be linked to index.php to avoid the Directory browsing not allowed page.

Also
Your getting ODBC errors on your configuration page...

And I do aggree that Intel is a good choice for motherboards...

If warranty is an issue. Intel stands behind there product for three years where most all others will only do a year.

Thanks for the tips!

Default Barton = GOOD

Dave Barnes, you're getting a fast system. I just built an almost identical unit for a friend two weeks ago. He got a soltek board with DualDDR and the nForce 2 chipset with 2 x 256 generic (Infineon) 333Mhz memory, same HDD and Barton 2500+. We installed XP Pro, Office XP Pro, Norton 2003 AV and he insists on having MSN messenger load at start.
I also put JV16, Spybot S & D, and RegProt on. As an example, after a clean boot ( in which he gets his desktop in about 32 seconds and all services complete in about 56) he can open Adobe reader 6.0 in less than 2 seconds - opening a 1.5 MB PDF! My 1700+ (512 333Mhz) takes 6 - 7 on the first crack and down to about 3.5 after that.

It's fast. Oh ya, I just used the stock heatsink and fan and it runs about 32C. It is a very cool chip.

Have fun! (o;

P.S. Make sure to install the blaster patch before you connect to the internet, or at least shut off messaging in the services (in administrative tools).
I think it was sauldam who had a problem with that a few weeks ago.

Yes.

I'm just cleaning off a PC for someone else with the same problem. This one is REALLY messed up.

You can download the patch from various sites at the moment - NOT to be confused with the one that was being circulated by email.

If it's any help, have a look at http://www.ntlworld.com. They have the patch as a standalone and removal standalones in case you are infected.

I would like to know what brand of memory you are buying 2 GIG of PC3200 memory for $135 i really don't believe it is possible. And if I remember right i read some where the new power Mac G5 runs at 1000FSB maybe wrong but i thought i read that somewhere it is not something i use. As far as the price on the Intel 3.2 it is not to low as i know i can get them for $430

You are correct the prices are per stick. Which as I said earlier "Shoot I am roughly 100.00 off"

Let me clarify the original prices still do stand on a piece bt piece basis. I don't think I made that very clear before. When I wrote the correction. My apologies. :)
