Default Anyone running / know about a Cobalt Qube 3 BE?

I just purchased an old Qube 3 Business Edition that, according to the seller has a fresh install and all available updates. I can access the Qube through Port 444 and do all of the setup, but am unable to get the regular Port 80 web server running. Status Report also shows a 'Red Dot', 'Not Running' for the web server. Any idea how to fix this? Even doing a bare metal install is problematic in that he Restore CD will not run on the two Wintel computers I have available. I know very little about Linux, so if it is a matter of poking around with Terminal, please keep it as simple as possible.

I was just about to suggest that you try fixya.com, when I noticed that you posted a question there yesterday!

You might also try TechRepublic.com . You'll need to register in order to post here, but it's free and easy. Once you're a member, click on Forums in the blue page header, then on Ask a Question on the following page.

There are more than a few there who specialize in doing little but answering tech. questions.

Thanks for the suggestions. FixYa turned out to be a disaster (defined as wasting $20 and about 6 hours time). I'll give TechRepublic a try.

That sucks!

I saw no mention of having to pay; was that one of those deals where you're asked for payment only after you've invested time registering, composing your question? Or, did you have to pay to view any replies?

Let me know if you need any help using TR. Also, once you've posted your question there, send me a link to it, and I'll bring it to the attention of several there who thrive on Tech. Q&A.

I looked at the TR website and was not happy with the amount of information one needs to supply to join (phone number?). I'm not part of a business, actually I'm retired. Yes I know you could spoof all the answers, but that doesn't see right either.

As to FixYa, yes you can post question for free, but that is a very slow process (getting a reply that is) and I finally gave up and popped for the $20 chat session. To summerize: I ended up chatting with 6 different people, 4 of which eventually (eventually being the key word) admitted they had never even seen the Qube, let alone work with it. FixYa's system has a definite flaw... there is no way for one 'expert' to review prior dialogue, which means you start from scratch each time, ask the same questions, and give the same replys over and over again. Of the two that seemed to have a clue, one said he had hands on experience and we just started to make progress when the Chat session abruptly ended for no apparent reason. Another flaw in thier system is once that happens, you have no ways to continue where you left off, or even find the same 'expert'. The 6th person seemed to know something about the Qube, but also disappeared. Their (FixYa's) method of continuing your case (but not the current chat) is to send you an 'click here' email which takes you back to their website with a pop-up that askes if you want to keep looking for a solution, or give up. I got that a few times, now even that doesn't happen. I tried to submit the question again, but they wanted another $20, which isn't going to happen.

TR has very many members who are neither IT professionals nor part of an IT business; and, many have dummied in much of their information. If you cruise the discussions you'll see members with Locations such as "Noobyoobywabba, Palau," "Somewhere or, Other," "Lost In, Ohio," etc., none of which are real.

My own Acct. Info. shows only the 1st letter of each as being my First & Last Names. My Address show as being "Null, Null, Null, Pennsylvania 19999;" my Phone No., "6109999999."

Of the information carried on your Account, the only data that is publicly displayed is :
  • User Name
  • City/ State
  • Primary Role
  • Industry

So, feel free to dummy any and all location and/or contact data (other than e-mail address) that you are hesitant about giving. And, you can always revisit your Acct. data at any time and make any changes you desire.

I guess the memory is the second thing to go... When I tried to sign up it informed me that I'd been a member since 2005 (at least my Email address has)!. Since the account was idle for so long they requested that all the info be supplied again. Anyway, I'm up and running and here is the link to the question:

Hmmm, it won't let me enter a link. Seems I haven't made enough posts to qualify for the privilege. Here's the key info:

forumID=101&threadID=310892&start=0

Thanks for your help.

OK; found it.

When I get back to TR, probably late tonight, I'll locate & PM some of the members most likely to be able to help.

Hi your Qube 3 isn't really Linux at least if you are trying to do a restore back to it's original specifications. Did you download the latest version of the software at the Sun Cobalt ftp site?

You can also get the manuals for setting it up from the sun website.

In order to do an installation of the software you need to boot another PC from the installation CD. I just used an old PIII laptop to run the installation CD. Also be aware that you should not have your hub connected to a router.

As for the webserver have you configured it, eg set up the domain name for the server?

Kevin
