Default Domains Vs Subdomains

Is there an adverse effect with search engines by creating a site using a subdomain as opposed to an actual domain? I have heard people say that subdomains will be ignored by the search engines, but I find this difficult to believe unless the subdomain files are specifically excluded in the robots.txt file. Am I correct on this?

I've actually heard the opposite. That subdomains can help quite a bit.

Welcome to WebProWorld, pgantt

As spidersam mentions, there are beliefs that it's a benefit to have sub-domains.
But, definitely no ill effects, so you're good to go
