Default Computing::: Grid and cloud.

For a while, I have known about Grid computing and hosting. That is so important that IBM have a Grid computing home page. Today I learned a new concept, cloud computing and cloud platforms, seemingly another important IBM technology. (Search for cloud computing on that page. I get 889 results).

Not a single response on this important topic?

Chrome is part of the coming shift to cloud computing.

This is the next big thing looks very interesting. i think its already avalible for companies atm but it comes at a price which i think is why atm it hasent taken off as of yet. give it a couple of months and near the end of the year it will definatly make an enormous impact on companies just starting and also excisting companies. havent seen to many demonstrations only ones ive seen were at the E3 expedition. looks very streamline

Cloud computing is really confirming its buzzword status, with major companies cutting the costs by moving the non-critical data to the cloud - the crunch situation seems like a contributing factor. This line of development is probably going to yield new trends, but who's going to grab the leading position (and, most importantly, make neat profits out of it) is yet unclear. In the meantime, users are hesitant - the perspective of finding yourself locked out of your own data is pretty scary, actually.

So you don't take backups?

I have backups on:
  1. Different computers.
  2. CD's.
You find more info on cloud computing on my OOP site. Grid and cloud computing are here to stay IMO.

Well, I meant that in terms of user apps such as mail and "desktop" apps in the cloud are quite okay, and I don't share the freakout sentiments about it (just as you said, cd and harddrive backups are there to be), but, when it comes to the point of referring to the cloud to store data (thus avoiding investing in infrastructure), an out period might be a risk to be reckoned with.

All that is freely hosted or syndicated in one way or another can be lost. Don't put too much of your business in syndication and free hosting.
