Default Benchmarking Apache

I am interested in benchmarking a Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP configuration across different Linux operating systems to determine which OS provides the best environment for performance - will the Apache Benchmark utility ab be sufficient for this task?

Any suggestions for other ways to generate meaningful benchmarking results across different operating systems?
