"Revolutionary new optical-storage technology currently under development will allow the equivalent of 250,000 high-quality MP3s or more than 115 DVD-quality movies and about 40 HD movies on a single CD-size medium. At 200 layers a disc, future versions of the technology will make it possible to store up to 5TB of data on one disc—the only question is, when will we find the time to watch all this content?"

Impressive. Wonder what the cost per disc will be.

It says later in the Q&A section of the article. Initial cost for the drive will be $3,000 and each 600GB disc will cost $30-50. That's extreme early-adopter prices, those will come down over time.

Wonder what data is so large that it requires that kind of storage? You could probably fit large chunks of the internet on it....

Encyclopedia with multimedia? But more realistic is the next generation of high definition. Japan has already said it will start rolling out the next level of high definition about 2015. Have a look at 33 megapixel Super Hi-Vision (Ultra HDTV) could be on the air in 2015 - Engadget with 33 megapixel (7,680 x 4,320) resolution and 22.2 channel surround sound.

challenges so far have included building a camera that can record it, and equipment to transfer the 24Gbps uncompressed stream.

<edit>Anyway to stop VB converting urls into the pages title? If I wanted to use the pages title as a link I would of done it myself.</edit>
