Default .CN domain names

Hi all,
I had a wierd request from China today asking whether I objected to another business trying to buy our domain name with extension .CN. I have looked into this and apparently its the China domain extension. It is also greatly more expensive than other extensions.
I obviously objected to having the other company buy this name, but was advised by the person who contacted me that if I don't register it, they will. Has anyone had this happen and have adverse effects. My gut instinct says to purchase the domain, so another person doesn't, but its looking like a sales ploy by a company selling domain names. I have already purchased the .com and run the website off .com.au.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Regards.
Miles

I've seen this same "ploy" on several boards. There are brokers calling trademark and domain name owners trying to get them to buy the .cn versions.

It is a definite strong-arm play. And .cn domain names are the wild-west right now. And the 'net is such a murky thing over there that it is really hard to tell if somebody is a scammer.

Not sure where owning a .cn version will ever be more important than owning a .ws or a .bz, and we've never spent a nickel on those. I've never read any compelling reason to get China-centric, either.

Network Solutions sells .cn's for $39.99, so you can always price shop.

Thanks for your input nottheusual1.
Considering the price with Network Solutions I went ahead and bought that domain extension. Better safe than sorry hey
Kind regards.
