Yesterday I participated on a Microsoft seminar. There it was told that Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc. uses a new data format:
Office Open XML - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
that has reduced file sizes with up to 50 % compared to binary files. There are other advantages with this format. By using
XSL Transformations (XSLT) the files can be transformed to other formats like PDF, RSS etc. This may increase the speed with which XML driven technologies are being used in webdevelopment.

Other important topics discussed on the seminar were concepts like unified communication and Microsoft's communication server.
