Default "Java" robot eating up bandwidth

One of my websites is getting a huge number of hits (in the thousands per day) from robots identified as "Java". Does anyone know where this is from? I'm thinking of banning them, since they are using up so much of my bandwidth.

In the server logs, there are several different versions, such as Java/1.4.1_04 and Java/1.5.0_06.

I'm guessing that this isn't a legitimate search engine robot, but I can't understand why anyone would want or need to hit my site that much.
