Default mySQL 5 vs mySQL 4

some php scripts of mine have stopped working due to the host's upgrade to mySQL 5. where do i start to solve this issue? suddenly tables and fields are missing. surely the 5 is a higher version and i shouldnt have any problems on this right?

If tables and fields are missing, then that sounds like you've got an issue with files being lost or corrupted during the upgrade. You can try a repair, but you may need to have the host restore from backup or recreate the tables on your own. This doesn't sound like version problems if only some of your php scripts stopped working.

The first thing you need to consider, is finding another host.
It was completely irresponsible of them to unilaterally upgrade a component that is not just a software piece, but a data storage device.

The first thing that should have been done before the upgrade, is backup the database.

There is significant differences between 4 and 5. Many scripts are not affected, but some are.

You should contact the host and demand that they fix it.
It may just need a repair done on the database
or maybe a backup can be retrieved.

You should also find out if they updated the PHP or other software versions at the same time...as many times this is done in unison...if so it may be more of a PHP issue than MySQL....

Yes, but if the sql statements in the php are doing multiple joins or other complex things, as many times in complex php scripts, that could cause it too...he needs direct access to the database outside of php to ensure what is happening....many scripts are not PHP 5 or MySQL 5 compatible because of changes...doesn't mean the data is gone and we can not know if he does not go to direct access, such as through a shell.
